President Trump approves emergency aid for Kentucky after severe weather

 February 17, 2025

President Donald Trump's administration steps in to address the devastating aftermath of severe weather conditions plaguing Kentucky.

According to The Owensboro Times, Trump has approved Governor Andy Beshear's request for an emergency disaster declaration following widespread storms, flooding, and landslides that have claimed at least eight lives since February 15.

The declaration encompasses all 120 counties in Kentucky, with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) now authorized to coordinate disaster relief operations and provide crucial resources.

FEMA will allocate 75% of federal funding for emergency protective measures, demonstrating the federal government's commitment to supporting affected communities.

Federal response mobilizes as local rescues intensify

Emergency crews at local, state, and federal levels have launched into action, conducting over 1,000 rescues across the affected regions. Jeremy Slinker has been appointed as the Federal Coordinating Officer to oversee FEMA's response efforts throughout the state.

The Whitesville Fire Department reported responding to seven calls since early morning hours, primarily focusing on water rescues. They received additional support from the Daviess County Fire Department, while the Owensboro Fire Department tackled multiple incidents involving stranded motorists on Carter Road.

Governor Beshear expressed his gratitude to President Trump for the swift response. He said:

Thank you, President Trump, for approving my request for an emergency disaster declaration for Kentucky. Now federal funding is available to impacted areas, helping us better respond and support affected Kentuckians.

Infrastructure damage prompts immediate action measures

While Daviess County has primarily experienced flooding, infrastructure damage has become a growing concern. A significant portion of the shoulder on KY 951, north of Knottsville in eastern Daviess County, has been washed away, creating hazardous driving conditions.

The governor has implemented several measures to assist affected residents, including the launch of the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund. Additionally, Beshear signed an executive order enabling Kentucky pharmacists to provide emergency 30-day refills for non-controlled medications.

The state government has established a comprehensive support system for residents with non-life-threatening needs. Citizens can access assistance through the Rapid Needs Assessment Form or contact emergency services directly for various concerns, including power outages, medical needs, transportation issues, and food and water shortages.

Kentucky communities unite through disaster response

The severe weather event has triggered an unprecedented emergency response across Kentucky, with President Trump's disaster declaration providing critical federal support to aid recovery efforts.

Eight Kentucky residents have lost their lives in storm-related incidents since February 15, prompting Governor Beshear to declare a state of emergency before requesting and receiving federal assistance.

The coordinated response between local fire departments, state emergency services, and federal agencies demonstrates Kentucky's resilience in the face of natural disasters. With FEMA's support and the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund in place, affected communities now have access to vital resources for recovery and rebuilding efforts.
