 March 9, 2025

The remains of Alex Hodgson Doughty, a 32-year-old from the United Kingdom, were discovered in a wooded area in Kingsland, Georgia. This tragic ending comes after he vanished during a vacation in Jacksonville, Florida in September 2022.

According to Fox News, Alex Hodgson Doughty's remains were found over a year after his disappearance during a Florida vacation.

Originally visiting Jacksonville, Doughty was last seen alive on September 11, 2022, at Bay Street Bar and Grill. Following his evening out, he was reported to have been transported by taxi to Kingsland, Georgia, about an hour away.

Mother's Heartbreaking Appeal on Social Media

The alarm over Doughty’s disappearance was first raised by his mother, Pamela Hodgson. Deeply concerned, she used Facebook to seek help, citing that her son had vanished without keeping in contact since arriving in the U.S. She speculated he might have visited Callahan or Fernandina, both in Florida.

"Alex has been missing now for four months. Please help find him. While there are still uncertainties in Alex's disappearance... it is believed he stopped in Callahan and/or Fernandina, Fla., on this journey," Pamela Hodgson shared at the time, emphasizing the lack of communication and the family's growing worry. Her appeals highlighted the distress and concern enveloping Doughty's family and friends back home, setting off international interest and a desperate search for any leads.

Investigation and Discovery Details Revealed

The breakthrough came when Doughty’s remains were found on February 4 in a privately owned area in Kingsland, approximately 35 miles from where he was last seen. The quiet locale turned out to be the final resting place of the missing tourist after months of painstaking searches.

An FBI-led team was integral to the discovery. Utilizing advanced geolocation data from Doughty’s phone, agents were able to narrow down the search area dramatically. The Jacksonville field office of the FBI and their Evidence Response Team were credited with locating the remains.

Kristin Rehler, Special Agent in Charge, confirmed the find and expressed a bittersweet mix of sorrow and relief at providing closure. "While we had hoped to bring Mr. Doughty’s family better news, we are thankful to be able to provide them with some closure," she stated.

No Suspicion of Foul Play in Tourist's Death

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Medical Examiner's Office undertook the task of officially identifying the remains, which confirmed them as Doughty's.

The FBI has stated that there are no suspicions of foul play regarding the tourist's death. Consequently, no criminal charges are anticipated. "The agency does not suspect foul play and no charges are expected," announced an FBI spokesperson.

This resolution, while somber, answers some of the agonizing questions that Doughty's family and friends have harbored since his inexplicable disappearance. The case, though closed, leaves a lingering sense of tragedy over a trip that ended so mysteriously far from home.

FBI Commends Team Effort in Solving the Case

The work of the FBI Jacksonville’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team (CAST) was especially praised by Rehler for their relentless effort in using technological tools to solve the mystery of Doughty’s whereabouts.

The successful resolution is attributed to the commitment of federal investigators, local law enforcement in Georgia and Florida, and international cooperation between U.S. and UK authorities, ensuring thorough coverage and examination of Doughty’s last known movements.

While the discovery does not bring Doughty back, it provides a necessary closure to a perplexing case and serves as a reminder of the capabilities and reach of modern investigative techniques. It brings some comfort, knowing the lengths to which teams will go to resolve such heartbreaking mysteries.
