Russia strikes Ukrainian cities in deadly overnight assault

 September 29, 2025

Russia carried out a massive assault of drones and missiles on Ukraine overnight into Sunday, leaving at least four people dead and more than 70 injured across several cities.

According to Breitbart, the capital of Kyiv bore the brunt of the devastation, with residential buildings, a kindergarten, and a medical facility struck during the bombardment. Officials said a 12-year-old girl was among the dead, bringing renewed urgency to Ukraine’s pleas for stronger Western support.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 595 drones and 48 missiles, most of which were intercepted or jammed. Despite the high defense success rate, dozens of strikes penetrated Ukraine’s shield, setting off explosions across Kyiv and other regions while filling city skylines with thick black smoke.

Kyiv suffers repeated devastation

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s city administration, confirmed at least four fatalities and 10 injuries in the capital alone. “The Russians have restarted the child death counter,” he said, referencing the young girl killed in the blast. Kyiv officials stressed that residential areas were deliberately struck.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage at more than 20 locations in the city, including high-rise buildings and health facilities. Emergency workers used saws to cut through rubble while shattered glass and twisted metal littered the streets. Families who escaped destruction waited outside, clinging to pets and bags of essentials.

At the city’s central train station, hundreds of civilians sheltered underground as anti-aircraft guns fired above and the deep buzz of drones echoed overhead. “The sky has turned black again,” said one woman named Erika, who described how she has become used to rushing to seek cover during bombardments. Another woman said her children treat air raid alerts as “a terrifying game we can’t escape.”

Casualties spread beyond capital

The Interior Ministry confirmed that up to 70 people were wounded nationwide, a revision from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s earlier estimate of 40. Officials said over a hundred civilian objects were damaged in just one night. Strikes targeted regions including Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa.

In Zaporizhzhia, regional head Ivan Fedorov reported 27 injuries, including three children. He said more than two dozen buildings in the regional capital were damaged or destroyed, with emergency operations underway to rescue survivors. Videos shared by officials showed burning apartments and rescuers carrying people out of damaged stairwells.

Zelenskyy condemned the timing of the strikes, highlighting that they occurred just after the United Nations General Assembly convened in New York. “This vile attack came virtually at the close of UN week, and this is exactly how Russia declares its true position,” he wrote on X. He added that Moscow wants to escalate violence and “deserves the toughest pressure from the world.”

Moscow’s position at the UN

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the UN General Assembly one day earlier that Moscow had no intention of attacking Europe. Instead, he pledged that Russia would offer a “decisive response” to any actions perceived as aggression. Ukrainian officials pointed to the new wave of attacks as evidence that Lavrov’s assurances were meaningless.

Russia’s Defense Ministry later claimed that its forces intercepted 41 Ukrainian drones overnight. Kremlin officials did not immediately comment on civilian casualties caused by their own strikes in Ukraine. The dual messaging left many world leaders questioning Moscow’s true objectives.

Residents inside Kyiv recounted moments of terror during the bombardments, describing frantic escapes from crumbling homes and screaming neighbors. One survivor, Ilona Kovalenko, said her neighbor banged on her door covered in blood, pleading for help for her daughter. That daughter, 12-year-old Oleksandra, died instantly, becoming another young victim of the conflict.

Regional defense tensions escalate

The scale of Russia’s assault prompted action in neighboring Poland, where the military deployed fighter jets as strikes hit western Ukraine. Polish authorities called the move “preventative,” underscoring rising fears the conflict could cross borders. Officials said prior incidents of drones landing on Polish soil added to the urgency.

In Estonia, recent reports accused Russian aircraft of entering airspace, drawing condemnation from European partners. Moscow denied involvement, claiming neither its planes nor drones were intended to cross NATO borders. Still, European leaders criticized the ongoing provocations and urged vigilance across the continent.

Analysts warned that Russia’s actions increase the risk of unintended regional escalation. “The danger lies in miscalculation,” one European security expert noted. “Even accidental incursions carry the possibility of sparking direct confrontation.”
