Scandal Unfolds as Oregon Commissioner Charged with Felony

 March 7, 2025

Melissa Fireside, a recently elected Clackamas County Commissioner, is embroiled in a serious legal battle involving theft charges and forgery.

According to Daily Mail, Commissioner Melissa Fireside is accused of defrauding an elderly man and forging another lawmaker's signature amidst her campaign.

Melissa Fireside won her seat on the Clackamas County Commission in a tightly contested election, securing 52% of the vote against incumbent Mark Shull. Fireside, previously admired for her dedication to community issues, has now been thrust into controversy.

Her narrow victory came after significant challenges, including public scrutiny over Shull's controversial remarks.

Last year, amid her election campaign in September, allegations emerged accusing her of engaging in fraudulent activities. Fireside is charged with defrauding Arthur Wayne Petrone, an 83-year-old resident, of at least $74,000. The charges also include accusations that she forged the signature of state Representative April Dobson.

Details on the Alleged Misuse of Political Trust

The fraudulent activities reportedly involved the misuse of a computer to access Petrone's funds and obtaining his signature under pretenses. Following these events, an investigation was launched in October, leading to a police search of Fireside's home just a week before the election concluded.

The complexity of the case led to the involvement of the Oregon Department of Justice, headed by Attorney General Dan Rayfield. A conflict of interest with the local district attorney necessitated this move.

Both Petrone and Dobson, the two main individuals affected by Fireside’s actions, were confirmed to be unrelated by justice department spokespeople.

Criminal Proceedings and Legal Defense

In the courtroom, Fireside faced arraignment in the Clackamas County Circuit Court where she was ordered to avoid any contact with Petrone or Dobson. Meanwhile, her attorney, Mark Cogan, emphasized her presumption of innocence, stating, "My client, Ms. Fireside, is presumed innocent and nothing has been proven."

Despite her legal counsel’s defense, state Representative April Dobson has publicly condemned Fireside’s actions and called for her resignation. Dobson detailed how she initially loaned Fireside money under a contract set to be repaid within a month—a commitment Fireside honored. However, later revelations questioned the origin of the repayment funds.

Community Responses and Forward Actions

Dobson expressed her disillusionment with Fireside’s actions, especially given the trust placed in her as a public official. "We have so much work ahead in Clackamas County, and our residents deserve leaders they can trust," Dobson stated, adding that the alleged crimes were entirely unacceptable for someone in Fireside's position.

Attorney General Rayfield has made clear his office’s stance on corruption and abuse of power, declaring, "It does not matter who you are, which political party you're in, or what position you hold. We will aggressively prosecute those who victimize Oregon's seniors."

Implications for Clackamas County's Governance

The case against Fireside has raised questions about the integrity and trustworthiness of elected officials in Clackamas County. As the community grapples with the implications of these charges, the focus remains on maintaining the region’s leadership standards and ensuring that those who represent the public adhere to the highest ethical principles.

The unfolding of this case will likely influence future electoral campaigns and the general approach to political candidacy in the region. The expectation is that greater scrutiny and perhaps new measures will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.
