Scrutiny Intensifies on Governor Walz's Management During 2020 Unrest

 August 17, 2024

In May 2020, as the nation grappled with the death of George Floyd, Minnesota found itself at the epicenter of a wave of protests.

According to LA Times, Governor Tim Walz's responses to these events are under renewed scrutiny amidst recent political developments.

George Floyd's agonizing death in Minneapolis triggered a global outcry against systemic racism and police brutality. Captured live by a bystander, the distressing footage showed a police officer kneeling on Floyd's neck for almost nine-and-a-half minutes, resulting in his death.

Three days post the tragedy, with criticisms mounting, Governor Tim Walz mobilized the Minnesota National Guard. His decision came amid escalating violence, including the burning of a police precinct, a stark symbol of rising tensions in the city.

Trump Lauds Walz's Action Amid Crisis

President Donald Trump was vocal in his support for Governor Walz's strategy during these fraught times. About a week after Floyd’s death, Trump praised the governor’s mobilization of the National Guard, referring to the action as “incredible” and effective in restoring order.

"Tim, you called up big numbers and the big numbers knocked them out so fast, it was like bowling pins," stated Donald Trump regarding the National Guard’s deployment under Walz's command.

The local government and state reports later criticized both city and state leadership. They highlighted that the delayed and inadequate responses likely escalated the unrest and damage.

Varied Perspectives on Walz’s Leadership

Recently, Governor Walz has been criticized by figures including his vice-presidential counterpart, Senator JD Vance, who accused him of failing to prevent the riots from escalating. Despite these accusations, many have defended Walz’s actions as a balance between authority and community support.

Duchess Harris, an academic, articulated this balance: “That is a delicate balance that I think he has managed: where he has supported the police and ... supported community members simultaneously, and many state officials are not able to do that.”

Conversely, artist and activist Toussaint Morrison viewed the governor's actions as hostile towards protesters. He remarked on feeling targeted and brutalized by the National Guard, suggesting an attempt to intimidate protesters rather than protect public safety.

Implications for Walz’s Political Future

Walz's selection as Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate has catapulted these past actions back into the spotlight. His track record as governor, which includes reassigning the Floyd case to the state attorney general and additional police funding, faces renewed evaluation.

Michelle Phelps, an observer of political dynamics, considers Walz a centrist Democrat who has sought to balance reform with maintaining security. Despite criticisms, some community voices still support Walz's nuanced stance on dealing with civil unrest and law enforcement challenges.

Moving forward, Governor Walz’s handling of the 2020 unrest continues to generate mixed reactions. His efforts to manage both public safety and the protester’s voices highlight the complexity of governing during social crises.
