A violent incident unfolded at a bus stop in northern Israel early Monday when a 25-year-old man launched a deadly assault on a soldier and civilian.
According to the New York Post, Karem Jabarin crashed his vehicle into a bus stop at the Tishbi Junction on Route 66 near Yokne'am, where he proceeded to stab a soldier, steal his weapon, and open fire on passing vehicles, killing an elderly driver before being fatally shot by border police.
The incident began when Jabarin deliberately drove his car into the bus station structure where only two people were present. After the crash, he attacked a 20-year-old soldier from the Armored Corps with a 12-inch knife. The soldier, who works as a heavy-load truck driver, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa for treatment.
Witness describes harrowing escape from attacker
Gideon Shalom, who was present at the bus stop during the attack, initially approached the crashed vehicle thinking it was an accident.
His quick thinking saved his life when he noticed the assailant brandishing a knife. As quoted by Shalom to Israel's national broadcaster Kan:
I escaped over the road barrier, he stabbed the young man, and I heard two shots in my direction. It was a nightmare what happened here.
The situation escalated when Jabarin seized the wounded soldier's rifle and began firing at passing vehicles while running down the highway. During this rampage, he fatally shot 85-year-old Moshe Horan, who was driving with his 51-year-old son.
Border police officers, who happened to be traveling to a training exercise, encountered the armed suspect. They quickly responded to the threat, exiting their vehicle and neutralizing Jabarin. Both the attacker and Horan were pronounced dead at the scene.
Community mourns loss of beloved local farmer
Moshe Horan was a prominent figure in the Jezreel Valley region, known for his expertise in melon farming and gardening. His connection to the area ran deep, as his parents were among the first settlers of Kibbutz HaZore'a, where he spent his entire life.
The kibbutz released a statement remembering Horan's impact on the community. His dedication to family and community service left an indelible mark on those who knew him. The statement from his kibbutz noted:
A family man, committed to his children and his life as the silver lining in the life of the community where he was born and lived his whole life.
Horan leaves behind his wife Betty, four children, and ten grandchildren. His loss has deeply affected the tight-knit farming community where he lived and worked throughout his life.
Swift response ends deadly confrontation
Social media footage captured the final moments of the attack, showing Jabarin running along the highway while firing at vehicles. The video ends with him falling to the ground after being shot by border police agents, bringing the violent incident to an end.
The terrorist attack near Yokne'am resulted in two fatalities and one serious injury when Karem Jabarin crashed into a bus stop, stabbed a soldier, and opened fire on civilians. The incident ended when border police officers fatally shot the attacker, but not before he claimed the life of Moshe Horan, an elderly farmer and respected community member.
The wounded soldier remains hospitalized while authorities continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this violent assault.
