The Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, became the site of a devastating tragedy when a gunman killed three people, including two Southern California men who were in town for a bachelor party.

According to SFGATE, the shooting occurred Monday morning in the valet parking area, leaving the community in shock and searching for answers.

Dakota Hawver, a 26-year-old Reno resident with no prior criminal record, allegedly fired 80 rounds from a 9mm handgun, targeting innocent bystanders. The suspect's weapon initially malfunctioned but was quickly fixed, allowing him to continue his deadly rampage that ultimately claimed three lives and injured three others.

Bachelor Party Celebration Turns Deadly

Justin Agulia and Andrew Canepa, both 33-year-old residents of Ventura County, were waiting for their airport ride when they were fatally shot from behind. The two friends were part of a larger group celebrating a bachelor party at the popular casino resort.

Canepa, a beloved figure in his community, was the co-owner of Side Street Cafe in Newbury Park and a devoted father to a young son. Friends, customers, and community members have begun leaving memorial candles outside his restaurant, showing the profound impact he had on those around him.

Local officials, including Ventura County Supervisor Jeff Gorell, expressed their grief over Canepa's death, particularly noting his warm presence at the restaurant. The loss has deeply affected the Newbury Park community, where Canepa was known for his dedication to both his business and his family.

Local Resident Among the Victims

Angel Martinez, a 66-year-old Reno resident, became the third victim when the shooter targeted him in the parking lot. The longtime casino and restaurant worker was driving through the area when the suspect, who was hiding behind another vehicle, fired multiple shots at his car.

Martinez's legacy in Reno spans more than three decades in the hospitality industry, where he built a reputation for his culinary passion. Coming from a large family of eleven siblings, Martinez was remembered on a GoFundMe page for his lifelong love of cooking and his role as a father and grandfather.

Family members have initiated fundraising efforts to honor Martinez's memory and support his loved ones during this difficult time. His death has particularly impacted the local hospitality community, where he was a familiar face for many years.

Law Enforcement Response and Investigation

The Reno Police Department demonstrated swift action, arriving at the scene within two and a half minutes of the first reports. Officers encountered resistance from the suspect, who allegedly fired at them and struck a police vehicle before being shot and apprehended.

Two shooting victims remain hospitalized but are expected to recover fully, while a third injured person has already been released. Authorities have maintained privacy regarding the identities of the surviving victims as they continue their investigation.

Police investigators have confirmed that Hawver legally purchased the weapon two years ago and recently acquired ammunition. However, they have yet to establish any connection between the shooter and the victims or determine a motive for the attack.

Nevada Resort Community Seeks Answers

The incident at the Grand Sierra Resort has raised serious concerns about security measures at Nevada's gaming establishments. The Sparks Police Department and Washoe County Sheriff's Office are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the full scope of the tragedy.

The unprovoked nature of the attack has left both local residents and tourists questioning the safety of casino properties. Law enforcement officials are reviewing security protocols while working to piece together the events that led to this senseless act of violence.

The communities of both Reno and Ventura County continue to mourn as they await further details from the ongoing investigation. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of public violence and its devastating impact on families and communities across state lines.
