Three members of the same family are dead and a fourth was rushed to a hospital after a shooting at a rural North Carolina home that authorities say was a domestic dispute, with the suspected gunman among the dead.
Deputies from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office responded to a home on Brooks Road in Prospect Hill, a small community roughly 45 miles outside Greensboro, early Wednesday morning. They found four adults suffering from gunshot wounds outside the residence. Three were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth was transported to Duke University Hospital, the Daily Mail reported.
Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden confirmed that the suspected shooter was among the three killed. Authorities have not publicly identified any of the victims or the gunman.
Authorities call the shooting a 'domestic family event' with no public threat
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation issued a statement describing the scene and the agency's role in processing evidence and conducting interviews. Fox News reported the NCSBI's statement in full:
"Deputies arriving on scene found multiple people who had been shot. One person was transported to Duke University Hospital with a gunshot wound, and there are multiple other fatalities."
The NCSBI added that there is "NO THREAT to the general public, and the event is contained to the above address." Police separately described the shooting as an "isolated incident" and a "domestic case involving family members."
Sheriff Durden asked for prayers. Just The News quoted him saying:
"This was an isolated incident. Please keep the family in your prayers."
His office said it was still working to notify the victims' next of kin. All of the victims and the shooter were adults and members of the same family, according to authorities.
