 May 8, 2025

A Tennessee jury delivered a pivotal verdict in a case that sparked nationwide protests and discussions about police brutality in 2023.

According to Breitbart, former Memphis Police Department officers Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith were found not guilty of all charges related to the death of 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and kidnapping.

The verdict came after nine hours of jury deliberation in the state trial. The officers faced multiple charges stemming from a traffic stop that turned fatal in January 2023, when Nichols was pulled over for alleged reckless driving.

Fatal police encounter unfolds in Memphis

The incident began when officers stopped Nichols' vehicle around 8:30 p.m. on January 7, 2023. During the initial confrontation, officers dragged Nichols from his car while shouting expletives despite his calm requests to stop and assertions of innocence.

Video footage released by Memphis officials documented two separate confrontations between Nichols and the officers. The first altercation occurred during the traffic stop, while the second took place at a different intersection.

During the second confrontation, officers were captured on video repeatedly punching Nichols. The situation escalated when pepper spray was deployed, affecting both Nichols and one of the officers involved.

Evidence presented through body camera footage

Nichols can be heard in the released video saying he didn’t do anything and asking officers to stop.

The footage, taken from three police body cameras and a street pole camera, shows the incident from several angles. It captures how the situation grew more violent, including the officers’ use of pepper spray and a baton.

The officers' aggressive behavior was evident in the footage, with one officer threatening Nichols after recovering from being accidentally hit with pepper spray. The videos showed Nichols bloodied from the confrontation as officers demanded his compliance.

Different outcomes for involved officers

While Bean, Haley, and Smith received not-guilty verdicts, two other former officers involved in the incident chose different legal paths. Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr. had previously entered guilty pleas to federal charges and provided testimony during the federal trial in 2024.

The case drew significant attention nationwide, prompting discussions about police reform and accountability. The release of the video footage in 2023 led to protests and calls for justice across the country.

Resolution brings complex case to close

The state trial of three former Memphis police officers concluded with their acquittal on all charges related to Tyre Nichols' death in January 2023.

The jury's decision came after reviewing extensive video evidence and testimony, including footage from multiple cameras showing two separate confrontations between Nichols and the officers during a traffic stop for alleged reckless driving.

While these three officers were found not guilty, two other former officers previously pleaded guilty to federal charges and testified in federal court, highlighting the complex nature of legal proceedings in cases involving police conduct.
