US Helicopter 'Struck by a Laser' From Mexico While Patrolling Border

 February 20, 2025

Tensions escalate along the U.S.-Mexico border as a Border Patrol helicopter faces dangerous interference during routine surveillance operations.

According to The Western Journal, a Customs and Border Protection helicopter was struck three times by laser beams originating from a vehicle on the Mexican riverbank while patrolling near McAllen International Airport on February 9.

The incident occurred approximately 13 miles west of the airport, where Air Interdiction Agents conducting regular border surveillance encountered multiple laser strikes from across the border. This event marks one of several similar incidents in recent months targeting Border Patrol's Air and Marine Operations personnel.

Multiple laser attacks raise serious safety concerns

The dangerous nature of laser attacks on aircraft cannot be understated, as even small laser beams from ground level can cause severe visibility issues for pilots. The federal crime carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, highlighting the gravity of such attacks on aircraft safety.

Similar incidents have been reported in other locations, including a January 9 laser attack on a helicopter in Jacksonville, Florida. In that case, authorities successfully apprehended one suspect, though no injuries were reported in either incident.

Border Patrol agents have already implemented additional safety measures, including the discontinuation of body camera usage in the field to prevent potential tracking of their locations.

Escalating violence threatens border security operations

The laser attacks represent just one aspect of increasing hostile activities along the southern border. In January, Border Patrol agents faced direct gunfire from Mexican cartel members while operating on Fronton Island.

The situation has become increasingly volatile, with suspected cartel members also targeting American civilians. A group of hikers in San Diego County's Jacumba Wilderness experienced a violent encounter when two suspected cartel members initially confronted them verbally before opening fire.

One hiker sustained a leg wound during the incident, which began with warning shots fired into the air before the suspects directly targeted the group.

Border patrol adapts to mounting challenges

The Customs and Border Protection agency issued a statement regarding the laser incidents, emphasizing the serious nature of such attacks. According to the release:

When laser beams are aimed at any piloted aircraft, whether military or commercial, what might seem like a tiny beam on the ground can blind aircrew, potentially causing a midair collision or other incident.

These security challenges have forced Border Patrol to modify their operational procedures. The decision to remove body cameras demonstrates the agency's efforts to protect their personnel from potential targeting and surveillance by hostile elements across the border.

Border security forces face complex obstacles ahead

The recent laser strikes near McAllen International Airport highlight the evolving security challenges faced by U.S. Border Patrol agents.

These incidents, combined with direct armed confrontations and civilian targeting, demonstrate the increasingly complex and dangerous situation along the U.S.-Mexico border.

As federal authorities work to address these threats, Border Patrol continues to adapt their strategies and protective measures to ensure the safety of their personnel while maintaining border security operations.
