A U.S. service member has been confirmed as the driver responsible for a deadly multi-vehicle crash on Germany’s A3 autobahn, according to German prosecutors.
According to Stars and Stripes, the incident occurred Sunday evening near Frankfurt and resulted in three fatalities, prompting a full overnight closure of the busy highway as authorities conducted their investigation.
The collision happened around 7:20 p.m. on the A3 autobahn, just past the Frankfurt-Süd junction in the direction of Würzburg. A 25-year-old U.S. soldier, driving a Honda, collided with an Audi in the far-left lane of the highway. The impact of the crash caused the Audi to lose control and breach the highway median.
Once across the median, the Audi collided with two vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. The violent nature of the collisions resulted in immediate and tragic consequences for several occupants. A 20-year-old male and a 21-year-old female traveling in one of the struck vehicles were both killed at the scene. The 38-year-old man driving the Audi was transported to a nearby hospital following the crash. He later succumbed to his injuries, bringing the total death toll from the crash to three individuals.

Frankfurt’s Chief Prosecutor, Dominik Mies, stated that local investigators had determined a U.S. soldier was at fault in the crash. When approached for clarification, officials with the U.S. military stopped short of identifying where the soldier was stationed.
On Monday afternoon, signs at the main exit of Clay Kaserne, a U.S. Army base located in Wiesbaden, Germany, reflected the recent tragedy. The sign had previously indicated that more than 2,000 days had passed since the base’s last traffic fatality. By Monday, it had been reset to one day.
Although some speculated about the connection between the soldier and Clay Kaserne due to the timing of the sign reset, spokespeople for U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden declined to confirm any specific assignment. Instead, they referred all questions related to the individual’s military affiliation to the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
