In an alarming breach of national security, three U.S. Army soldiers have been apprehended for allegedly distributing confidential military information to China.
According to Fox News, charges have been filed against the trio, accusing them of undermining the security framework of the United States.
On Thursday, authorities detained two active-duty soldiers, Jian Zhao and Li Tian, and a former soldier, Ruoyo Duan, in Oregon. These individuals were previously stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
Investigation Uncovers Extensive Espionage Operation
The investigation into this espionage scheme revealed that from November 28, 2021, to at least December 19, 2024, Duan and Tian collected sensitive military details. This information included technical manuals and specifications of key U.S. Army vehicles, such as the Bradley and Stryker fighting vehicles.
Jian Zhao, who served as an Army supply sergeant, was implicated in a deeper layer of espionage activities. Starting in July 2024, he actively conspired to gather, package, and transmit classified U.S. defense information to contacts in China.
Zhao orchestrated the sale of hard drives containing data marked 'SECRET' and 'TOP SECRET,' successfully negotiating deals that earned him at least $10,000.
His actions did not stop at selling classified information; he also conspired to sell a U.S. government-owned computer, military documents, and data concerning military readiness for potential conflicts with China.
Authorities Respond to Compromised Military Secrets
Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed that the arrests were indicative of a serious betrayal by these soldiers. "The defendants arrested today are accused of betraying our country, actively working to weaken America’s defense capabilities and empowering our adversaries in China. They will face swift, severe, and comprehensive justice," she stated.
Highlighting the gravity and responsiveness of U.S. intelligence and law enforcement, Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Seattle Field Office, assured that the nation’s secrets are a top priority. "These arrests should send a message to would-be spies that we and our partners have the will and the ability to find you, track you down, and hold you to account," he remarked.
FBI Director Kash Patel echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the commitment to American security. "The men will face American justice after stealing America's defense intelligence capabilities and empowering adversaries like China in betrayal of our country," Patel declared.
