You ever see video of how some of our B-17s returned to their bases. That was just a "normal day at the office" for them, IF they made it back at all (NOT the Hollywood version, military documentary films)! Might also check out a midair between a TWA 707 & an EAL Constellation over central CT in the '60s. The Connie lost it's tail, & crashed, but the 707 only lost the outboard 1/2of it's starboard wing (at the outboard engine pod), & landed safely at JFK, with a full load of passengers aboard. It can be done, if the pilot is skillful & calm enough.
