NJ state trooper suspected in double homicide, suicide after killing ex-girlfriend and her new partner

 August 6, 2025

A gruesome crime scene unfolded in Franklin Township, New Jersey, where two individuals were found shot to death in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide perpetrated by a state trooper.

According to WABC, officers discovered the bodies of 33-year-old Lauren Semanchik and 29-year-old Tyler Webb in Semanchik's Upper Kingtown Road home on Saturday afternoon. Both victims had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.

New Jersey State Trooper Sgt. 1st Class Ricardo Jorge Santos was later found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a vehicle at Johnson Park in Piscataway. Investigators believe Santos killed his former girlfriend and her new partner before taking his own life.

Troubled Relationship History Preceded Fatal Encounter

Authorities have revealed that Semanchik ended her relationship with Santos in September 2024, approximately 11 months before the deadly incident. Since the breakup, Semanchik had reportedly accused Santos of exhibiting harassing and controlling behavior.

Officials noted that Semanchik had recently begun dating Webb, which may have triggered Santos. The timeline of events leading up to the shootings is still being pieced together by investigators working on the case.

Santos had been a member of the New Jersey State Police and was most recently assigned to the agency's dignitary protection unit, which provides security for high-ranking state officials.

Victims Remembered For Their Service To Community

Lauren Semanchik was a well-respected veterinarian at Long Valley Animal Hospital, where colleagues are mourning her sudden and violent death. Her professional dedication and personal qualities made her beloved within the veterinary community.

A practice manager at the animal hospital described Semanchik as "a phenomenal veterinarian" and "one of the kindest souls you could ever encounter." The statement emphasized how deeply her loss is being felt by those who worked alongside her.

Tyler Webb served as a volunteer with the Pinewald Pioneer Fire Company, where he had taken on several leadership roles during his service. His contributions to public safety have been highlighted by his colleagues.

Connection To NJ Governor's Security Team Raises Questions

Santos had previously served in a high-profile security position as part of Governor Phil Murphy's executive protection unit. This specialized team is responsible for safeguarding the governor and ensuring his safety at all times.

At the time of the incident, Santos had been reassigned to the dignitary protection unit, which provides security for other high-ranking officials in the state. His access to firearms and training as a law enforcement officer have become relevant factors in the investigation.

A spokesperson for Governor Murphy expressed shock at the events, stating: "We are shocked and devastated by this horrific tragedy." The statement noted that further comments would be withheld during the ongoing investigation.

Authorities Seek Additional Information In Ongoing Investigation

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office is actively investigating the case and seeking any information that might shed light on the circumstances surrounding this apparent murder-suicide. Detective Sergeant David Petelle and Detective Quayshaun Brooks are handling the investigation.

Officials have established multiple channels for tips, including a direct line at (908)788-1129 and the Hunterdon County Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-800-321-0010. They have assured the public that all anonymous reports will remain confidential.
