 June 23, 2024

A horrific crime shattered the peace of a Houston community as a young girl’s life was tragically cut short.

According to Daily Mail, Twelve-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was found dead in a Houston bayou after sneaking out of her home, leading to the arrest of two suspects on charges of capital murder.

Jocelyn left her family’s residence around 10 pm on a quiet Sunday night. The disturbing discovery of her body the following day raised alarm and sorrow within the community.

Suspects Johan Jose Martinez Rangel, 22, and Franklin Jose Pena Ramos, 26, were apprehended by police. Reports suggest that they lured the young girl under a bridge, detaining her for over two hours and possibly subjecting her to sexual assault.

Possible Motives and Legal Proceedings

The background of the suspects has brought additional concern to this case. Both individuals, originally from Venezuela, were in the U.S. illegally and had prior encounters with the US Border Patrol. Rangel was arrested on March 14th, and Ramos on May 28th.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office has set the bail for each suspect at $1 million, reflecting the gravity of the charges.

A critical part of the investigation involves tests to determine if Jocelyn was sexually assaulted; these results could potentially influence whether the death penalty is pursued.

Alexis Nungaray, Jocelyn's mother, expressed her deep anguish and confusion over the loss of her daughter. She described the surreal pain and the overwhelming need for justice for her young daughter, whose life was ruthlessly taken.

Community Reaction and Support

"It's like it's not real. I keep hearing everything, and I hear it and it's not registering," Alexis Nungaray said in a heart-wrenching statement. "I don't know why, what possessed her to walk around late at night in this area out of all places," she added, revealing her frustration and despair.

I want karma to hit them, I'm angry. They took advantage of her. She's so young, she's 12. I want justice. I want whoever has seen them to please call the police. They took my baby. Next, Joamel, Jocelyn’s uncle, memorialized her as a "smart, loving, nurturing young lady" who "brightened up the room every time she came by and was loved by everyone around."

The community is also rallying to support Jocelyn’s family through financial contributions; a GoFundMe campaign has gathered nearly $40,000 to cover funeral expenses.

Billie Jackson, the passerby who discovered Jocelyn’s body, recounted the haunting moment. "I drove past, and when I looked up the creek, I thought it was a mannequin. I did a U-turn, and I stopped on the bridge, put my flashers on, looked down, and realized it was someone. I parked right here and called 911 immediately," Jackson stated.

Conclusion

A Houston community is left reeling after the tragic death of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray, whose body was found in a local bayou after a night of horror.
