Russian Fighter Jet Damages U.S. Drone Over Syria

 July 27, 2023

In an alarming display of aerial audacity, a Russian fighter jet recently damaged a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone over Syrian airspace. This incident, caught on high-resolution video, is the latest in a series of escalating encounters between Russian and U.S. forces in the region.

The incident, which occurred on July 23, saw the Russian fighter flying "dangerously close" to the Reaper, dropping flares into the drone's path. This reckless act resulted in severe damage to the Reaper's propeller, highlighting the growing tension and disregard for flight safety by Russian forces in Syria.

Rising Tensions

Prior to this incident, there have been numerous instances of Russian pilots harassing U.S. aircraft and ground forces in Syria. Russian planes have flown aggressively around other MQ-9 Reapers, including one drone that later launched a missile that killed ISIS leader Usamah al-Muhajir.

In another instance, a Russian jet fighter put the crew of an MC-12 surveillance plane in danger by forcing it to fly through the jet’s turbulence. These actions are seen as Russia's response to the United States' military support to Ukraine, escalating the stakes in this high-stakes game of aerial poker.

A Closer Look

On July 23, a Russian fighter jet engaged in a dangerous encounter with a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone over Syrian airspace. The Russian aircraft flew alarmingly close to the U.S. drone, subsequently dropping flares into its flight path. This act of aerial audacity resulted in one of the flares severely damaging the Reaper's propeller.

Despite the damage, the drone's crew managed to navigate it back to its home base. The incident, captured in high-resolution video, clearly showed a "Z" symbol on the Russian fighter jet, a mark adopted by Russian forces during their invasion of Ukraine. This incident underscores the escalating pattern of Russian forces harassing U.S. aircraft in the region.

Final Thoughts

The U.S. Air Forces Central Command has called upon the Russian forces in Syria to put an immediate end to this reckless, unprovoked, and unprofessional behavior. The disregard for flight safety not only detracts from the mission to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS but also puts lives and equipment at risk.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the escalating tensions and the need for a firm stance on the protection of our nation's equipment, whether manned or unmanned. As the skies over Syria continue to be a stage for these dangerous encounters, the question remains: how will we respond to these growing provocations?

deploy flares ahead of the aggressor.

  2. Put a sparrow missile on the drone for self defense. An act of aggression deserves an aggressive response!
