Many people know about the Korean War, but not many are aware of Ethiopia's contribution. Ethiopia sent thousands of soldiers to fight alongside the UN coalition force led by the United States against communist South Korea during the Korean War in 1951. 

Their ability to fight at night and their commitment to leaving no man behind soon earned them a fearsome reputation as the Kagnew Battalion. "Never be captured on the battlefield," was their motto, and none of them were ever captured. 

When a force of Chinese soldiers that outnumbered him twenty to one ambushed his patrol during the war, 2nd LT. Mamo Habtewold of the Third Kagnew Battalion displayed extraordinary courage and heroism.
