Firefighters Rescue Baby From Burning Residence

 April 20, 2021

Firefighters often rely on the information homeowners and witnesses provide them when entering a burning building. When there are smoke and flames obscuring their vision, they need to know specifically, what they are looking for.

Just Dogs?

As Detroit firefighters ran into a residential blaze on April 5th, they were headed to rescue the family's dogs trapped in the basement. Firefighter Lavaughn Williams noticed movement off to the side.

"I saw something out of the corner of my eye wiggling, and it was a baby with some sheets over here. And she was face down, and she was wiggling like she was struggling to breathe. The smoke was heavy in the room, so my parental instincts kicked in. I am a father, thinking of my child. I picked the baby up and ran out quickly as possible."

The baby is an 18-month-old little girl who was sitting in her crib with her blankets as the room filled with smoke. Four adults had been in the house, and they all were able to get to safety.

The little girl's adoptive mother was one of the four. Firefighters maintain that no one told them there was a baby in the home, just that there were dogs.

According to Fox 2, even the 911 dispatcher could be heard saying there were dogs in the home still. DFD battalion chief Mike Nevin said, "We pulled near 20 puppies and/ or dogs out of the building. (They) never mentioned, never once mentioned, a child in the building."

Questions, Needing Answers

Williams immediately handed the toddler over to Nevins upon exiting. When the adoptive mother approached him to take the little girl, Nevins refused.

He gave the 18-month-old over to medics who brought her to Detroit Children's Hospital. Here Child Protective services and Detroit police became involved in the situation.

Nevins feels that there is a strong case for neglect as they "noticed the possibility of some bumps and stuff on the child." However, a neighbor who did not want to be identified said she heard the mother say that the baby was inside multiple times.

An assertion Nevins disagrees with. "Absolutely not, and I've got 21 witnesses that wear black fire gear and hard hat helmets that'll tell you the same thing," said Nevins.

Firefighters are trained to be observant even in impossible conditions. Thankfully, Williams investigated the movement and got her to safety.

  1. the dogs would bring money in who knows what manner, but the child was just adopted, no care, no love, hope not true.

    1. Years ago when I was a fire chief, I attended a NAFSTI confrence in Memphis. I was talking to a Battalion Chief from Chicago Fire ( if I remember correctly) who told me about a similar situation that they had been involved in. It see some " illegals" were deep frying shrimp inside a third ffloor walk up on a landing, on top of a barbecue grill. One moron decided to move the pot, and attempted to lift it without gloves or a pot holder, it of course burned him, he dropped the very hot oil into the grill, it ignited and poured aflame over the side of the grill onto the landing. Of course the men started yelling as the fire began to take hold and women and more men poured out of the apartments. The fire department had to call a third on it. After the fire it was discovered that five children died as no one told the firemen there were children in two apartments. The parents didn't seem worried according to the Chief. I have never forgotten that time after 40 years of hearing that.

  2. never give that child back to the mother ! same goes for all the dogs ! do not return any of them back to that 4 some !

  3. What does this say about the adoptive parents ??? Seems like an investigation is warranted for the safety of the child !!! Isn't it funny that the adults could escape the fire and the baby was left in there !!!

    1. I agree with the firemen they could have gotten the baby or could have been yelling as she could about the baby they got that God led him to the place where the child was

    2. A similar incidence happened in Chicago in the 1970' s. There was a tenement fire where some illegals were boiling some chicken on a barbecue grill with a pot of hot oil. They had the pot really hot and it was smoking heavily. One tried to take it off the fire and being how it was extremely hot, he dropped it onto the open barbeque where it burst into flames. The residents panicked and ran out of the building. They left their children inside. If I remember correctly 5 children died.
Never understand some people and their selfishness.

    3. Not all adoptive parents. Don't put all in one category please. I know some and one in my own family who adopted and the child had a wonderful life until he was killed in an accident when he was 16. The accident was not his fault.

  4. It appears they wanted the Baby to die from the fire.I reach this determination by asking anyone that has a brain why none of these adults brought that precious Baby out of a burning house..I pray that these attempted murderers never get access to another Child and hopefully they will all be charged with attempted murder.

  5. How terrible. I love my dogs but I sure as hel l would have tried to get my baby out and if I couldn't that would be the 1st thing I told the firemen. That baby will hopefully be adopted by a loving person soon..

  6. As being the parent of an adopted child, I can't fathom the idea that the parents didn't inform the firefighters that a child was still inside of their burning home. After all the hoops that the state government makes you jump through, it boggles my mind. It is easier to have an abortion than it is to adopt a child. My friend adopted a child. He and his wife had a pool in their yard, because of that fact, both parents had to become certified lifeguards. The state demands a home study of you and your family if you desire to adopt a child. The home study investigates your home for safety. I know of a couple that wanted to adopt a child, they were turned down because the lived near a busy road. The couple had to move from that residence to another before they were approved. You are required to undergo background checks, first aid and cpr training (that's not a bad thing) among other requirements that are not required of people that can naturally conceive a child. The process took us years.

  7. "That's truly disgusting, that these 4 people thought more about the dogs, than they did an 18 month old child. I hope they NEVER get this child back and that they face SEVERE Child Neglect & Endangerment charges. They belong in JAIL!!

  8. Yet people wonder why front line res-ponders develop a negative attitude toward the public? They see things like this every single day that they work. They see the worst in humanity. I wonder how they keep their sanity myself, considering what they have to deal with. How did he not punch out the so called adults who worried about their dogs but not their baby?

  9. that's BS the baby should of been first out with the grown ups I am a father and my kids come first in some thing like that not the damm dogs.....

  10. Some people are very strange they want to save dogs ( I believe this is good) however, how about saving a baby being even better. Thanks to the firemen for saving that baby and not turning the baby over to the adoptive so-called mother.

  11. As an adoptive parent of two, having jumped through hoops to become an adoptive parent, I wonder how she ever qualified.

  12. I would die in the fire w/ my baby unless the fire department was on scene..running to them for my babies rescue. Thank god I’ve never endured/witnessed a fire. My comment is the only thought i could imagine going thru my mind during such a horrific event as a fire.
