New $13 Billion Investment in Enhanced 'Doomsday Planes' by U.S. Air Force

 April 30, 2024

The skies are set to welcome a new generation of national security sentinels.

Daily Mail reported that the U.S. Air Force has contracted Sierra Nevada Corp for a robust $13 billion to engineer a fleet of advanced 'doomsday planes' for nuclear emergencies.

The current fleet comprises four Boeing E-4B Nightwatch aircraft, integral to America's military preparedness amid escalating global tensions. However, these planes are grappling with technological obsolescence and a scarcity of replacement parts.

The freshly dubbed Survival Airborne Operations Center (SAOC) project promises to revamp this critical aerospace asset by 2036. Sierra Nevada Corporation is on tap to infuse these aircraft with modern innovations while preserving some traditional elements of the E-4Bs, such as the setup of their two-story architecture.

Meeting the Future of Military Command with Advanced Technology

Among the planned enhancements are upgraded communications systems and even basic conveniences like a kitchen, which will mark an evolution in operational sustainability and comfort.

Noteworthy in their current capability, E-4Bs feature robust protections against nuclear and thermal impacts, sophisticated satellite communications, and an advanced air-conditioning system indispensable for cooling key electronic components.

They are designed for prolonged aerial operations, capable of mid-air refueling, and have logged up to 35.4 continuous hours airborne during critical missions.

Shifts in strategic partnerships saw Boeing relieved of its exclusive contract in December 2023, paving the way for Sierra Nevada's pivotal role in this project.

Enhancing Strategic Airborne Operations

In addition to their mechanical upgrade, the SAOC planes will play a pivotal role in the National Military Command System (NMCS), ensuring seamless command across various stages of conflict and supporting government continuity.

These aircraft remain pivotal in relaying emergency war orders, coordinating with civil authorities, and underpinning national contingency operations.

Further underscoring its strategic importance, the SAOC initiative will bolster the Air Force's Nuclear Mission by ensuring robust command and control communications necessary for overseeing nuclear armaments.

The SAOC, hosted by the First Airborne Command and Control Squadron of the 595th Command and Control Group, will maintain its home base at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska. This location underscores a strategic footprint deep in the American heartland.

Sierra Nevada Corporation Develops Advanced Airborne Command Center

In response to global tensions, notably after Russia heightened its nuclear alert in 2022, the existing doomsday planes conducted crucial training flights to sharpen readiness and assure national security.

A representative from Sierra Nevada Corporation expressed pride in their role:

SNC is building the airborne command center of the future! SAOC is a highly specialized aircraft that ensures continued critical command, control, and communication during national emergencies for POTUS, Secretary of Defense, and Joint Chiefs of Staff. We're honored to support this important mission.

According to the military branch:

As a command, control, and communications center directing US forces, executing emergency war orders, and coordinating the activities of civil authorities including national contingency plans, this capability ensures continuity of operations and continuity of government as required in a national emergency or after negation/destruction of ground command and control centers.

Conclusion

The $13 billion investment into the Survival Airborne Operations Center marks a significant step in ensuring that the U.S. military maintains its edge in aerospace command and control, especially under nuclear threat scenarios. Integrating advanced technologies and enhanced operational capabilities in these aircraft will replace the aging fleet and secure a robust framework for command continuity during national emergencies. Such initiatives underscore the critical importance and commitment of U.S. defense strategies to maintaining peace and security on a global scale.
