The Most Legendary Marine Battle In Iraq

 July 31, 2021

The Marines are a force to be reckoned with. They are a group of highly trained, skilled soldiers who go into battle with the expectation of coming out on top.

History of the Marines

The Marines got their start back in 1775. Samuel Nicholas visited Tun Tavern in Philadelphia intent on recruiting sharpshooters to protect Naval vessels.

He also wanted to have a competent landing force to take on some of the more challenging battles during the Revolutionary War.

The men he got to join up that day were known as the first Marines. As the marine became their own branch, they built a reputation of being a hardened, violent, and distinguished military force.

Battle of Fallujah

One of the largest battles Marines ever fought was the Battke of Fallujah. Ever since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Fallujah had been a breeding ground of insurgents. Multiple attempts to secure the city were made by coalition forces, but none were successful.

At the beginning of 2004 another attempt was made to take the city. This time by the Marines. However, their advance was short lived, and the Marines pulled back.

In November, they got another chance. Their goal was to push the enemy out of the city entirely. Three days into the battle, things became very intense.

The third day, was also the Marine Corps birthday, November 10th. A machine gun team fought until mortars came down. When the dust settled, two out of seven men were left.

Pushing On

The 3rd battalion 1st Marines ended up fighting house-to-house. Many of them injured from gunfire, mortar rounds, or RPG debris.

Despite their injuries the soldiers pushed on focusing on clearing houses and riding the city of enemy forces. To be sure they took out all the enemy fighters, some homes were even flattened.

Within those few days many of the insurgents were demolished. Their mass defense failed. Over 3,000 enemy forces died in the battle while only around 110 coalition forces were lost.

Unfortunately, many civilians were lost in the battle as well.

  1. With all due respect to the other branches of America’s military. This article referred to Marines as soldiers. Marines are Marines, the Army has soldiers. In reference to the video I of course was not there. But I would say this would be a typical mind of a United States 🇺🇸 Marine in a combat area! God bless America 🇺🇸 and all of my Marine brothers and sisters! Semper Fidelis forever! 0331 here from 71-77

  2. MARINES are
    Not soldiers.
We are a Breed, forged by the fire of god, country, corps. Never ending selflessness for our brothers.
Semper Fidelis is more than a motto
