A Tactical Comparison: Operation Iraqi Freedom Puts Russian Invasion Of Ukraine To Shame

 March 23, 2022

Before diving into the comparison, it's important to note that this is purely a comparison of tactics, not motives. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a violation of sovereignty, even if the Ukrainian government is no less corrupt than Putin.

Also, the U.S. led operation called Iraqi Freedom was certainly not without it's own moral complexity, though one thing is clear: it remains one of the most impressive projections of military might in history.

Everything from coordination, planning, deployment of a superior fighting force, advanced infiltration, and of course, air supremacy, forever changed the way that the world looks at large scale warfare.

As the Russia invasion appears to be stalled in it's fourth week, we can't help comparing it to the 21 day textbook invasion of Iraq that ended with a decisive outcome.

The key differences seem to be advanced infiltration, projection of superior military forces by the U.S. led coalition, and the decisive air supremacy established within hours of the invasion.

Contrast this with the Russian invasion, where neither ground forces or air assets have been able to obtain decisive victories. It also appears that Russia had limited ability to project an advanced infiltration, unlike operation Iraqi Freedom where CIA and U.S. Special Operations Forces were able to provide advanced preparation for the invasion.

In the end, while operation Iraqi Freedom was a defining moment of shock and awe in military history, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been somewhat of a flop.
