 June 17, 2024

A tragic event unfolded as "monster" teen shot his parents, leading to his demise and injuring a deputy.

Daily Mail reported that the 19-year-old from Tampa ended the lives of his parents and was subsequently killed following a confrontation with law enforcement.

On the evening in question, deputies were summoned to a residence in Cactus Wren Place after Rebecca Ann Themelis, aged 48, reported her husband's shooting. The call escalated quickly as more gunfire was heard in the background.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered Christos Alexander wielding a firearm. Tragically, he shot his mother in the head before turning his gun on the officers.

Deputy injured during intense standoff

During the chaos, Deputy Shane McGough, 26, was wounded in the leg. The injury sustained by McGough was severe, requiring surgery to remove the bullet and mend a fractured tibia.

Body camera footage revealed Deputy McGough attempting to negotiate with Christos Alexander during the tense standoff.
"Show me your hands, show me your f****** hands," he demanded, a plea filled with urgency and tension.

Sheriff Chad Chronister noted the tragic circumstances deputies were greeted with. "Unfortunately the first person we encounter on the ground is the father. The father had succumbed to his injuries," he explained.

The deputies' bravery saved further tragedy

Christos Alexander's violent actions did not stop at the front yard. After shooting his mother and firing at deputies, he retreated into the home, prompting the deputies to return gunfire. Ultimately, the SWAT team and a robot discovered his and his father's body inside.

Sheriff Chronister spoke highly of his team's response: "Our deputies responded to a chaotic scene and immediately put themselves in harm’s way to protect our community," he affirmed.

He also recognized the potential wider danger if the situation had escalated. "Without our deputies' quick and skillful response, an entire neighborhood would have been in danger."

Christos Alexander Themelis had previously been under a risk protection order, which had led to the seizure of his weapons, raising questions about how he acquired the firearm used in the shootings.

Chronicling past troubles and investigation goals

This residence was not new to law enforcement, having been the focus of ten prior visits related to mental health and violence concerns.

"The monster we encountered this evening is responsible for not only injuring our deputy but also killing his mother and father," stated Sheriff Chronister, indicating a troubled history with the suspect. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover how Christos Alexander acquired the deadly weapon.

Reflecting on human suffering and its implications, Sheriff Chronister conveyed a message of zero tolerance for violence:

We don’t know exactly and we may not ever know why he became as violent as he did, but we do know inflicting injury or harm on another human being - it never matters what the reason is - it’s never OK. Period.

The community, the sheriff's office, and the families involved are left to mourn and heal from the devastating events that unfolded on that fateful night. As the investigation continues, authorities are dedicated to ensuring such tragedies are averted and those in need of mental health support are aided appropriately.
