Three victims, including a retired priest and his sister, and the gunman, were killed in a series of events that also saw two police officers injured.

The tranquility of a Sunday afternoon was shattered when Palm Bay police officers responded to a domestic disturbance call. At a press conference on Monday, Palm Bay Police Chief Mariano Augello detailed the tragic events that had transpired the previous day.

24-year-old Brandon Kapas was identified as the perpetrator. According to Chief Augello, Kapas engaged in a shootout with police, during which his grandfather was killed.

Unbeknownst to the officers at the time, Kapas had already claimed the lives of two other individuals. The victims were found at a separate location, linked to a vehicle used by Kapas.

These victims were later identified by the Diocese of Orlando as Father Robert “Bob” Hoeffner and his sister, Sally. Bishop of Orlando, Most Rev. John Noonan, expressed his sorrow, remembering Father Hoeffner for his compassionate service.

The link between Kapas and these victims remains unclear. "We don’t know the motive right now,” admitted Chief Augello.

Chief Augello commended the officers for their response. He believes their actions likely prevented a more catastrophic active shooter scenario.

Upon their arrival at a residence in northeast Palm Bay, officers were immediately met with a disruptive situation caused by Kapas at a birthday celebration. The incident quickly intensified when an officer tried to subdue Kapas with a Taser.

Kapas fought back, discharged a firearm, and during the exchange of gunfire, his grandfather was tragically killed. The confrontation ended when officers fatally shot Kapas.

Chief Augello highlighted the bravery of the responding officers. He stated, “Our officers did what they were trained to do. And that’s to neutralize and stop a threat to our community.” This sentiment was echoed by Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina, who praised the officers for their selfless service.

Community and Officials Respond to the Tragedy

One of the wounded officers was set to be released from the hospital on Monday, while the other is recovering from surgery. Their injuries, while serious, are not life-threatening.

Mayor Medina expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic events. He offered his condolences to the families of the victims and extended his thoughts and prayers to the community.
