Chicago experienced a weekend of chaos as a violent mob attacked police officers in multiple incidents. The attacks, which involved bricks, rocks, fireworks, and other objects, occurred as officers worked to shut down illegal drag racing and stunt shows throughout the city.
This is just the latest in a series of clashes between Chicago’s anti-police community and law enforcement officials.
The violence in Pilsen erupted after 40-year-old Shawman Meireis was struck and killed by a Corvette that was racing another vehicle on Cicero Avenue early Sunday morning.
Meireis, who was visiting Chicago from Florida, was celebrating her 41st birthday at the time of the incident.
This tragic event highlights the tensions that have been boiling over in Chicago for some time now. It’s clear that something needs to be done to address this growing problem before it gets any worse.
Unfortunately, the BLM riots opened the door to people thinking violent protests are acceptable. American cities have an uphill battle against civil unrest and it will incredibly difficult to close the door now that it’s been opened.
We can only hope that cooler heads will prevail and that a resolution can be reached before anyone else is hurt or killed, but we know through recent experience that this is unlikely.
